Fatal Train Crash in India Leaves 8 Dead and 25 Injured

Indian Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has regretted the accident and assured that an on-the-spot investigation has been initiated immediately.
On Monday, in northwestern India, a train crash left at least eight dead and 25 injured. The accident occurred when a freight train and a passenger train collided for reasons still unknown.

The accident occurred between 08:50 AM (local time), in the station district of West Bengal, mountainous area of India. This region is very common among tourist destinations in summer.
“While waiting for details, the Kanchenjunga Express would have been hit by a freight train (…) Police, doctors, ambulances and rescue teams were transferred to the place,” said the head of government of the region, Mamata Banerjee.

Among those killed, the driver of one of the trains died in addition to the assistant of the freight train driver and the guard of the train.
“We don’t have a precise way of knowing exactly what happened (…) apparently there was an omission of the signals, but we will know more after the investigation,” said Varna Sinha, director of the Railways Board.
India has the fourth largest rail network in the world by length, however, between April 2017 and March 2021 recorded 2,017 incidents with derailment as the most common cause.
